About us

The Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) is a short stay assessment and admissions facility specifically for patients requiring specialist medical, surgical, frailty or mental health assessment and/or opinion.

You will have been referred here by your GP, and Accident and Emergency Doctor or an Outpatients department. The Emergency Assessment Unit is staffed by dedicated medical, surgical and frailty doctors and nurses and supported by many specialist teams.

As the Emergency Assessment Unit is a short stay facility you may be transferred to another ward for further care and/or treatment.

If you require admission for further investigations and treatment for more than twenty-four to forty-eight hours you will be transferred to a ward most suited to your condition. For short admissions you will most likely remain on Emergency Assessment Unit.

Visiting times

You can read more about our visiting restrictions here.

Please note that children under 10 years old are not allowed in the EAU. Visitors must also book visiting on the day by calling the ward.
