What will happen if I attend the MDU?

Patient appointments are made directly through the medical consultant (in consultation with nursing staff first), or the Medical Day Unit nurses who will ring the patient directly to arrange a time slot available.

On the day of attendance we will ask you to report to Bay One where a member of staff will greet you and allocate you a treatment space.

Refreshments are available at all times and if you are in for the day then a sandwich will be offered to you at lunchtime.

Please note that as this is a day unit, patients will be treated in a space occupied with both male and female patients. Any issues or concerns regarding this can be brought up with staff either on the day of attendance or in advance whereby we will try our best to accommodate your wishes.

Will I be able to speak to a doctor when I come in?

As this is a nurse-led service, access to your consultant on the day is not available. Should there be any questions regarding your treatment we ask, where possible, that you discuss this directly with your consultant first. We have access to members of your consultant's team but only in emergencies.

What happens after treatment?

Depending on your treatment you will be able to leave shortly after your treatment has finished. The Nursing staff will advise you on the day. Follow up from the treatment will be through your consultant at your next out-patient appointment although please note we are unable to make these for you.

How do I arrange an MDU appointment for my patient?

Referral is by consultant only. Should a GP wish to access this service they must first refer the patient to a medical consultant within the hospital who will take responsibility for the patient's care whilst with us.
