Getting to Royal Surrey County Hospital

There are a number of options for you to choose from when travelling to Royal Surrey, but we would recommend using public transport wherever possible as on-site parking is very limited. If you do come by car, please allow extra time to park before your appointment.

If you need to use a wheelchair while you are here, you will find these just inside the main entrance. Please return them when you leave for other visitors and hospital users.

Travelling by rail

There are frequent train services from many of the surrounding areas to Guildford.

Guildford Train Station is on the main line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth, with Reading and Dorking connections.

A fast, frequent service is available with trains running approximately every 20 minutes.

From the train station it is possible to travel to the hospital either by bus or taxi.

Which bus to get

Safeguard Buses operate a regular service to Royal Surrey from Guildford Town Centre, via the train station, with buses running every seven or eight minutes.

You need to catch route five to the hospital and route four back into Guildford Town Centre.

The buses run at different frequencies at weekends and on public bank holidays. For more information about buses click here.

Also available:

  • Stagecoach route 1 (via Surrey Sports Park / University of Surrey)
  • A return to Guildford picks up directly outside the hospital Main Entrance (Bus stop HT1).

Travelling by bicycle or motorcycle

There are covered stands and secure storage for bicycles and motorcycles at the front and rear of the hospital.

Travelling by car

We have a few car parks around our Guildford site for patients and visitors to park in, with the main car park directly outside the front of the hospital.

Disabled/blue badge parking is free.

Car parking tariffs are as follows:

Up to 1 hour – £3.70

Up to 2 hours – £4.80

Up to 3 hours – £5.30

Up to 4 hours – £5.80

Up to 6 hours – £6.80

Up to 24 hours/Daily Rate – £9.80

Weekly – £20.70

Parking for Oncology patients undergoing treatment, who attend the hospital more than three times per month, is also free. Patients who fall under this category will be issued a permit by the St Luke’s Cancer Centre. 

Travelling by taxi

The taxi ranks in Guildford are situated at the railway station, adjacent to the Friary shopping centre and at the top of the High Street.

Alternatively, you may wish to contact local firms.

There is a freephone link from the hospital to City Cabs. The telephones for this service are situated adjacent to the main entrance reception desk and in the Radiotherapy reception of St Luke’s Cancer Centre.

Income support or low income

If you are on income support or low income you may qualify for reimbursement of some or all of the costs of travelling to your appointment, including the expenses of any escort if the hospital has recommended that you have one.

These costs can be claimed as a cash payment at the hospital Cashier's Office during opening hours of Monday-Friday, 9.00am-1.00pm provided you produce evidence of eligibility.

Alternatively, outside these hours, HC5(T) forms will also be available from outside the Cashier's Office to reclaim costs via post.
