International and Overseas nurses

Male nurse

If you are a qualified nurse but don’t have an NMC registration to work in the UK, here at Royal Surrey we offer an excellent structured on-boarding programme with an attractive relocation package and exclusive benefits specifically designed to welcome new international and overseas recruits to our Royal Surrey family.

Our dedicated international teams completely understand that relocating to a different country can be a daunting experience so we will be with you every step of the way. We have already deployed over 1,000 nurses from overseas, many of whom have gained promotions within their first two or three years.

"What I love about working in Millbridge ward is that no two days are alike.

Every day is an opportunity to utilise our skills, refine our knowledge and get to know more about our patients”

Nurses from the EU/EEA

We welcome applications from the EU/EEA. If you hold a qualification gained in an EU, EEA or EFTA country and you want to join the NMC register from 1st January 2021, you’ll need to follow the same application process as those trained outside the EU.  This also means that you will benefit from our International, structured on-boarding programme  to ensure that you are supported continuously throughout your time with us, including an intensive, structured training programme so that you are fully prepared to sit your OSCE examination.

Once successfully fully registered with the NMC you will automatically be promoted to become a band 5 staff nurse; but the support does not stop there. You would initially be supernumerary, followed by mentored support through your Preceptorship programme on the wards by our experienced nurses and clinicians.

Full details on how to obtain NMC registration can be found here.

OSCE

To underpin the overseas recruitment initiative the Practice Development Team at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust have designed a programme to support and develop the overseas trained nurse to undertake the Test of Competence (part two) OSCE.

The programme is facilitated by experienced Practice Development Nurses who have guided over 600 candidates onto the UK nursing register (Royal Surrey NHS foundation Trust, 2022).

With a 96% pass-rate (overall), the programme facilitates the alignment of the international nurse’s skills to the Test of Competence handbook and the NMC blueprints.

The programme covers all core elements set out in part two of the NMC test of competence:

  • Assessment, Implementation, Planning & Evaluation (AIPE)
  • Skills stations
  • Communication
  • Medicine management
  • Basic life support
  • Wound care.

The full course also features a mock assessment to ensure candidates have the opportunity to practice their skills under exam conditions in preparation for their final exam.

You would be fully supported throughout the journey to attain your NMC PIN. The Trust will pay for the initial cost of the OSCE test which will be recouped over the (agreed) period of employment. You and your colleagues, will be escorted to the OSCE test centre and your transportation is provided free of charge.

Once successfully fully registered with the NMC you will automatically be promoted to become a band 5 staff nurse; but the support does not stop there. You would initially be supernumerary, followed by mentored support through your Preceptorship programme. Lastly, upon receipt of your profession registration, the Trust has devised a transfer process to ensure that you are able to seamlessly move to the ward/unit/specialty of your choice.
