Appointments

 

We have a team of specialist therapists who are available to see you as required. These include dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists.

 

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy plays a crucial role in the screening, assessment and support for communication and swallowing difficulties that may arise throughout your treatment. They will work with you and your family to provide alternative means of presenting and relaying information and to monitor and assess your swallow function. One of their main roles is to help you eat and drink as normally as possible, for as long as possible. Read more about Speech and Language Therapy.

 

Physiotherapist

A physiotherapist will work with you and your family to help with any physical problems caused by your brain tumour. They can help with improving and maintaining your strength, keeping you safe within the home, preventing or reducing falls, and advising you on the help available to cope with any changes to your physical abilities. Occupational therapist

An occupational therapist will help you to manage normal activities and assist you to manage any tiredness that may be caused by your tumour or the treatment you are receiving. They will also provide exercises to improve arm function, assess and help with your memory and thinking, as well as provide equipment to improve access around your home. Consultant led clinics

Consultant led clinics take place within the Cancer Centre (Level B) every Tuesday and Friday afternoon.

At your first appointment with the oncology team, which will include your clinical nurse specialist (CNS), they will take a full medical history from you. They will talk you through the results of any diagnostic tests you have had and discuss the treatment options with you. They will also answer any questions that you may have.

 

Neuro-Oncology Clinics

Once you have commenced treatment, you will see a member of your team on a weekly basis in the Cancer Centre (Level B). This appointment will either be with your consultant or clinical nurse specialist (CNS), or specialist treatment radiographer. You will also been seen regularly by a neuro-oncology cancer support worker who will be able to help you with additional help and referrals you may need.

Scans

If you are having radiotherapy, you will have a scan three weeks after completion of the treatment. During other treatments you will be invited for regular scans to monitor the effects they are having. Once you have finished treatment, you will continue to have regular scans and these will usually take place approximately every three to six months.
