Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Our 28-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) looks after very ill patients who have been admitted for urgent and emergency care or are recovering from complex surgery and in need of more specialised care. Most of our patients will have problems with one or more of their vital organs, and may not be able to breathe on their own.

Each year, we care for around 1,500 patients on the ICU.

The service is run by a multi-disciplinary team, consisting of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, pharmacists, dieticians and psychologists.

Everyone has a dynamic, collaborative and effective approach to patient care. Together, the team continually strives to achieve the highest standards of patient-focused care.

Visiting times

Our visiting times are: 2pm-6.30pm, seven days a week. Please report to reception on arrival.

Service details

We support complex surgical procedures from specialities around the hospital including, hepatobiliary, upper gastrointestinal, gynae-oncology, urology and maxilla-facial patients together with emergency medical and surgical admissions.

Our unit has its own gym to actively rehabilitate patients.

In line with our organisational commitment to continually improving, we have an open and honest culture to acknowledge when things could have gone better and we constantly strive to improve.

We also have a strong research ethic within our department and have conducted numerous projects at regional, national and international levels.

Who is eligible for the service?

Critically ill patients who need urgent and emergency ongoing care, as well as comprehensive, complex surgical patients who require close monitoring and care postoperatively. We are also a tertiary referral centre for upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary related illnesses.

How to access the service?

We take referrals from: the Emergency Department (ED); Royal Surrey inpatient wards and from other adult intensive care units in our regional network (Kent, Surrey and Sussex); adjoining networks (Thames Valley & Wessex and South Central); and from other referring hospitals.

The decision to admit patients is made by the consultant intensivist lead.

Further information

Our Intensive Care Unit works very closely with the Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) who are also based on ICU. All patients are followed up by the CCOT to make they remain stable and recovering.

We offer a consultant-led critical care follow-up service, where the patient is seen by an ICU nurse, a psychologist and a physiotherapist, if required, following initial assessment.

If you have been a patient in ICU and have any concerns or questions about your recovery and rehabilitation that you would like to discuss please email the unit: rsc-tr.icufollowupclinic@nhs.net.
