Diabetes Dietetic Team

Diabetes dietitians provide nutrition-related diabetes support to all diagnosed with the various different types of diabetes.  Support can include weight loss, cardiovascular protection, general healthy lifestyle advice and carbohydrate counting, including more specific advice for those adjusting insulin.

The service includes clinic appointments as well as education courses offered for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

How can I arrange a referral to the dietitian?

If you are receiving your diabetes care at your GP practice, your GP or practice nurse can book you an appointment at your practice if available, otherwise they can refer you to see a dietitian at Royal Surrey County Hospital.

If you are receiving your diabetes care under the diabetes team at the Cedar Centre, you can request a referral from your consultant or diabetes specialist nurse.

Once you are under the care of the Paediatric Diabetes team, a referral can be made to our service through your consultant or diabetes specialist nurse.

Where are clinics held?

If you are attending an appointment at Royal Surrey County Hospital, your appointment letter will confirm the location of your appointment.

Most of the diabetes appointments are held at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, in Outpatients 14 (Cedar Centre).

Children and young people with diabetes will see the dietitian with the paediatric diabetes team when they come to their clinic appointment. Individual appointments are also offered. The Paediatric Diabetes service is held in Outpatients 14 (Cedar Centre).

Adult community clinics are currently held at the following GP practices:

Austen Road, Binscombe, Chiddingfold, Cranleigh, Dapdune, Springfield (Elstead), Fairlands, Guildowns, Grayshott, East Horsley, Haslemere Health Centre, Merrow Park, Milford and Witley, The Mill (Godalming), The Villages (Send), Shere, St Lukes, Woodbridge Hill and Wonersh.

What should I bring to my appointment?

The dietitian will want to do a dietary assessment, so please bring along a record of at least 3 days’ worth of your food and drink intake. If you are also testing your blood glucose levels, please either bring in your blood glucose meter or a record of these over the last week.

What do I need to do to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

If your appointment has been booked at your local GP practice, please contact your surgery directly.

If your appointment has been booked by the dietitian or if you have received an appointment letter from the dietetic department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, please contact them using the number provided on your letter.

Are there any group sessions that I can attend?

Yes. We run accredited adult group sessions for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

DESMOND (Diabetes Education for Self-Management of Ongoing and Newly-Diagnosed) is our locally run session for Type 2 diabetes. To be referred onto the program, you can ask your practice nurse or GP to refer you.

CEDRIC is our locally run session for Type 1 diabetes. You can request a referral from your diabetes specialist nurse or consultant at the Cedar Centre.

Group sessions are also run for children and young people. You and your child will be invited to the age appropriate sessions available.
