Inpatient care

What happens if my child is admitted to Hascombe Ward?

Inpatient care is provided on Hascombe Ward. If your child is admitted to the ward they will be seen every day on a ward round by the paediatric team. They will discuss your child’s care with their PTC, as well as liaise with the Children’s Community Nursing Team.

Other teams you may come into contact with:

Physiotherapists

The physiotherapists will support your child in hospital with exercise and physiotherapy. They can refer your child to the community physiotherapy services if this needs to continue once you go home.

Dietitians

The dietitians are available for support and advice when you child is struggling with eating. As well as being a source of knowledge, they can also organise prescription products, if needed.

Play specialist

A play specialist works on the ward Monday to Friday to help entertain your child. We have a play room on the ward. However, if your child is neutropenic the play specialist will visit your child in their room.

What facilities are available on the ward?

A chair/bed is available so that you can stay with your child during their admission. You can also bring any items from home that will make your child feel more comfortable during their stay. All of the rooms for our young cancer patients have a TV and DVD player.

Your child will be able to choose meals they would like each day from the children’s menu. Alternatively, they can request food from the adult menu. For parents/carers we are only able to provide snacks and drinks. However, a fridge and microwave is available in the ward kitchen. Please label food with your child’s name and date.

Parking is free with a Royal Surrey Cancer Centre parking permit.  Please ask one of the CNS team to provide you with one to display in your car.
