Your brachytherapy

Starting treatment

Before starting your treatment, you will have a call or a face-to-face chat about the procedure. At this appointment a member of your team will outline the treatment and answer any questions that you may have. It may be useful to have a family member or friend with you for this appointment.

You will then receive a letter about your first treatment. This will contain all the instructions that you need, including where to go and any preparation you may need to make. Please make sure that you read the letter carefully and follow any instructions to ensure that your treatment is able to go ahead as planned.

We always work hard to see you at your allotted treatment time. However, sometimes there are unexpected delays that occur which are beyond our control. We will keep you informed throughout your visit if we are running to time.

Who will be looking after you?

You will be looked after by a team of doctors, physicists, radiographers and sometimes nurses. It will include:

Clinical Oncologist

You will have a clinic appointment to see your doctor before you come for your internal treatment. This is to ensure you know what to expect and to give you time to ask any questions you may have.

Brachytherapy Radiographers

They will be present during your treatment. They operate the machine being used to treat you and are trained to deliver the treatment.

Medical Physicist

They provide radiation dose information. They may be present during your treatment, but are usually outside the treatment room.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

You will normally have met your CNS before you come for radiotherapy

End of treatment

On the last day of your treatment the radiographer will make-sure that you have a follow-up appointment booked with your doctor. This may be at a hospital closer to your home. You may also receive additional follow-up instructions, such as scans and test you may need at a later date. This will be outlined in the patient information leaflet for the treatment you have received.

You will be given a copy of your radiotherapy discharge summary. Another copy is sent to your GP. In due course a letter summarising your treatment in more detail will be sent to your GP practice.

Please remember, you are free to contact the department at any time after your treatment has finished should you have any concerns or questions. Please call 01483 571122 ext 6615.
