New state-of-the-art theatre officially opened
A new state-of-the-art theatre has been officially opened after a half-a-million-pound refurbishment.
The new Interventional Radiology Suite features the latest cutting-edge equipment that enables doctors to use x-ray fluoroscopy imaging to perform complex minimally invasive procedures.
Specialist Interventional Radiologists use real-time images to guide a tiny needle, or tube into the body in order to access a particular organ. This enables them to perform a variety of procedures, many of which are crucial for cancer patients, including delivery of intra-arterial chemotherapy (TACE) and radiotherapy (SIRT), ablation of tumours, cessation of emergency life-threatening bleeding, removal of blockages in the liver, and kidneys, and drainage of abscesses.
The refurbishment has significantly increased the size of the suite and improved the patient experience by providing a better environment for both pre and post-procedures.
The Trust’s Chair, Joss Bigmore, was joined by Dr David Pilborough, President of the Society of Radiographers to cut the ribbon and officially open the new suite.
Anita Sankar, Superintendent Radiographer, said: “Interventional radiology plays a vital role in both planned and emergency care offering both life-saving and life-altering procedures at Royal Surrey 24 hours a day.
“This investment means we have been able to secure the very latest equipment, which provides our six consultants with the very best imaging to assist with complex procedures.”
