Gastroenterology and Hepatology - Nutrition and Dietetics

Nutrition

The Nutrition Nurses at the Royal Surrey Hospital provide nurse led specialist support and advice for adult patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutritional input.

Enteral Nutrition

We are a central resource providing advanced clinical management, education, information and support to clinical staff to promote best practice as well as co-ordinating the therapies required for patients receiving artificial nutrition. This includes; placement and ongoing management of feeding tubes, monitoring of patients on parenteral nutrition (Parenteral Nutrition nurse), ensuring appropriate treatment plans and providing training to healthcare professionals, service users and their families/carers. We provide an inpatient and outpatient service, including holistic assessment for feeding tube placement, troubleshooting advice and planning admissions/discharges to enable improved care and experience for our service users.

We work across all specialities including; gastroenterology / complex nutrition, oncology and with the surgical teams as well as helping to support community services.

We offer direct patient advocacy and care, working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to consider the best outcomes for our patients that may require artificial nutrition for a range of short and long term conditions.

Our aim is to raise the profile of nutrition within the trust through contributions to the Nutrition Steering Group to implement national/local strategies relating to nutrition, risk management and ethical decision making. Focuses of this group include; protected mealtimes, highlighting those that need assistance and monitoring at meal times and nutrition and hydration awareness weeks.

Parenteral Nutrition

All aspects of Parenteral Nutrition (PN) in the Trust are managed by the Nutrition Support Team (NST). The NST is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, composed of three luminal gastroenterologists, a consultant biochemist, a specialty pharmacist team, a specialty dietetics team, and a clinical nurse specialist.

The NST undertakes three consultant-led ward rounds per week (Mon/Wed/Fri) during which it offers expert advice and support to patients who require PN.  The team works closely with the Trust's other tertiary specialties including Hepatobiliary surgery, Upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery and oncology, and has established links with regional home parenteral nutrition centres including Royal Berkshire, St George's and Southampton Hospital

Dietetics

Gastroenterology dietitians provide specialist evidence-based dietary advice and written resources to support patients to manage their condition, together with their medical treatment. Patients who have digestive conditions or surgery that affect their digestive system usually have special dietary requirements. Gastroenterology dietitians specialise in identifying these requirements and working with patients to achieve and maintain optimum health. We see patients with a wide range of digestive conditions including:

  • Coeliac disease
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease - Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis
  • Diverticular disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Bile acid malabsorption
  • Liver disease

If you have IBS, you may require advice on a low FODMAP diet and be invited to one of our FODMAP group sessions or one to one dietetic consultation.

We see patients that have been referred to us on the ward and in outpatient clinics by their Consultant or GP.
